Rihanna at London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week is in full swing but there was one show above all others that everyone was waiting to see.  That was the launch of pop star Rihanna’s debut ready to wear range for River Island.  So did it live up to expectations?  What do you think?

The collection was a mix of 90’s inspired garments in bold, primary colours which included jersey maxi dresses with splits up to the thigh, crop tops, sheer shirts and bomber jackets.  Tie-die was also a predominant feature on jumpsuits, A-line minis and an off the shoulder crop top.

The collection also features many accessories including baseball caps, head scarves, very large hoop earrings with biker boots and simple black heels to finish off the looks.  The dramatic red lipstick, which many models are sporting on the catwalks this year, finished off the looks perfectly.

When asked who the collection was for, Rihanna said “The girl that would wear this is full of personality, full of sass, but just loves fashion – most of all, they love fashion.  They want to express themselves through what they wear and that’s what I like to do.”

The collection goes live online and in River Island stores from 5th March.   I’m sure we will all be checking them out.

My photo shoot was inspired by Glam Rock a style of rock music that developed in the seventies. With my outfit I’ve tried to recreate the outrageous and over the top look of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust period and Debbie Harry from Blondie!

Fashion Through the Decades by The Style Team

The Style Team are currently studying styling as part of their Advanced Fashion Industry course.  After researching fashion, hair and make-up through the decades they choose to do their first shoot based on their favourite decade.  Here are some of the results, with many more to follow!!

My photo shoot was inspired by the Old Hollywood movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s which showcases elegant late 50’s fashion. I tried to capture the nostalgia of this era but with a modern edge.

From GTI to the ‘Oscars’

Laura-Jayne Halton was a Design FETAC Level 6 student in Galway Technical Institute in 201o/2011.  She was featured in the GTI’s Fashion Fiesta 2012 as an up and coming past pupil designer. This year she has surpassed all expectations by designing a dress for an Academy Award Nominee.  Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly is nominated for her Short Animation Film called ‘Head Over Heels’ and Laura-Jayne has the amazing task of designing her gown for the event.

Laura-Jayne heard Fodhla hadn’t decided on a designer for the event so on a whim she sent her an email congratulating her and sent along her ‘look book’.  Then to her surprise she received a reply saying that Fodhla loved her work and could she do a few sketches?  Laura-Jayne sent off her sketches and got a fantastic reply, ‘These are exquisite and we’d be delighted to have you as the designer’, says Selina Mills, Fodhla’s stylist.

When Laura-Jayne had been asked about the details of her design she is quoted saying, “We discussed it and she’d (Fodhla) like to keep a little bit of suspense and mystery about it.  It’s such a brilliant occasion so we’ll make the most out of it and it is nice to get a surprise. As I said to John (on the John Murray RTE Radio Show), it’s very classic and feminine, it’s an approach I take with all of my designs and it suits her down to a T, well hopefully!”

While on the John Murray RTE Show, Laura-Jayne had another turn of good luck.  James Murphy, CEO of Lifes2Good rang the Murray show and offered to fly Laura-Jayne out to LA to personally fit the dress on Cronin O’Reilly.  Halton is flying out a few days before the event to absorb the atmosphere and make the final touches to the gown.

Stay in touch with for more details of Laura-Jayne’s exciting adventure post Oscar’s!!!

Elle Magazine Cover Shoot with Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham is looking as stunning as usual on the upcoming March cover for Elle Magazine. This is not Posh’ first cover for Elle but as this is the magazine’s new look relaunch we think that this is a hot gig to land.  Shot by photographer Carter Smith, VB stars on the cover wearing a new season leather jacket and lace bodysuit by Burberry.

The interview with Victoria for the issue is set to provide a rare insight into 48 hours with the high flying fashion designer and with her upcoming show at New York Fashion Week next month, moving to the UK and her new website launch, this is an interview we are dying to read.

The March issue of the new look Elle Magazine is due to hit our newsagents here on Wednesday 30 January.

Who Wore Alexander McQueen Best…

The cream of the crop of British talent gathered at the O2 Arena in London to celebrate the 2013 Television Awards.‘Coronation Street’ stars Kim Marsh and Natalie Gumede clearly had the same glamorous vision in mind when they selected to wear this Alexander McQueen Resort 2013 gown.

Thankfully for Kim and Natalie, it was a case of same dress, different colour!!!

Emily’s version not only stands out because she selected a vibrant orange colour, but her gown also has a multi-coloured crystal-accented neckline.
Natalie was both stylish and warm having added a white fur stole to her look, amping up the glamour with a complimentary silver sparkling clutch.
Who do you think wore Alexander McQueen best this year?
